God’s House Is a House of Prayer for All People
This Sunday, our readings remind us that God’s love knows no boundaries.
Isaiah 56:1, 6–8 declares that God’s house shall be “a house of prayer for all people” and that God will gather those who have been outcast and pushed to the margins. This theme of inclusion continues in our Gospel reading from Matthew 15.
Jesus is approached by a Canaanite woman—a Gentile and an outsider who, by the standards of her time, stood outside the boundaries of Jesus’ community. Yet she is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. Though Jesus’ initial response seems harsh, the woman persists and boldly acknowledges him as “Lord”—something even Jesus’ disciples had been slow to understand. Jesus heals her daughter and commends her for her great faith.
Throughout his ministry, Jesus repeatedly crossed the boundaries of his time—not only geographic boundaries, but also religious, ethnic, and social ones. His mission reaches beyond the people and places others considered acceptable or worthy. God’s house truly is a house of prayer for all people.
Our worship service will also include a Temple Talk about Memorial & Other Funds, sharing how these gifts help further the mission and ministry of our congregation and the different ways you can contribute.
Bonnie Brix will serve as our Cantor, with Kathy Biederwolf providing accompaniment as we lift our voices in song and praise to God.
Thank you for worshiping with us! We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate a God whose love reaches across every boundary and welcomes all people.
