Brick by Brick: Building Faith Together!
A weekly reflection and a look ahead at Faith Lutheran Church.
A weekly reflection and a look ahead at Faith Lutheran Church.
This Week’s Reflection
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble." (Psalm 46:1)
When Martin Luther wrote the hymn "A Mighty Fortress," he based it on the words of Psalm 46. For Luther, nothing could separate us from God's love for us in Jesus Christ. Luther proclaimed that not even the forces of nature could come between God and his children, as we read in Psalm 46:2: "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea." Though Luther believed that the devil and the forces of evil were active in this world, Luther was confident that in the end God's Kingdom would triumph once and for all. Indeed, Faith Choir led us in singing the following words from "A Mighty Fortress":
And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us.
We will not fear, for God hath willed,
His truth to triumph through us.
Jesus' words from John 8:31 show us what Luther discovered as he studied the Bible, especially by translating the books of Psalms and Romans: “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” By immersing ourselves in God's Word like Luther did, we too can experience freedom in Christ through his death and resurrection. Jesus triumphed over sin and death on our behalf, setting us free from the power of sin. Now we are free to serve our neighbor through works of love.
Our worship service included musical works by JS Bach, a world-famous Lutheran musician. As organist Kathy Biederwolf played JS Bach's "Tocatta in d minor" for our Prelude, you could feel the Holy Spirit's presence reverberating in our sanctuary from down through the ages.

Small Group Opportunities
FALL FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Please sign-up in the Gathering Area for one (or more) of the following opportunities to get to one another better this fall....
Men’s Group – Are there any men who are interested in getting together once-a-month for breakfast and Devotions/Bible study?
German Baking – Last year we had a successful Scandinavian Baking event on a Saturday morning that was led by three Faith Lutheran members. This year we have had a request to try a German Baking event. (Black Forest Chocolate Cake or Feffernuts, anyone?)
Dinner Groups – For the past 2 years, we have had several “Dinner for 8” groups meet periodically for food, fellowship and reflection. In fact, some groups are still meeting! This is an opportunity to meet fellow worshippers in a relaxed setting and make new friends.

Happy Fall Everyone!
It's that wonderful time of year when there's a crispness in the air, the leaves are turning red, yellow and orange and it's time to turn the oven on!
We have many great bakers in our congregation, men and women alike. But we don't want to take away any time from your many other duties, chores, family, etc. just because it's time for our 3rd annual No Bake, Bake Sale! So, leave the mixing bowl, measuring cups, flour and sugar in the cupboard and write a check to FLC Women.
This is how it works. You determine how much it would cost you to bake something for a Bake Sale. Include the cost of ingredients, your time shopping, baking and helping at a sale. Then write a check for that amount to FLC Women and indicate No Bake, Bake Sale on the Memo line. Isn't that easier than baking?
This year all funds received will be divided between four entities. One-fourth to our Capital Campaign, one-fourth to FLY Mission Trip, one-fourth to LWR Shipping Fund (to defray costs of shipping quilts) and one-fourth for Personal Care Kits through Piece Corps..
So, put on your baker's hat and think about what it's worth to you to not bake something for a bake sale. Then write out your check, bring it back to church no later than November 1st and place it in the offering collection plate.
We thank you from the bottom of our muffin tins!
